MCP (connect AI tools)
appTown is an MCP server, so AI assistants and agents that speak the Model Context Protocol can read and change your apps' records and start their automations, as you.
- URL:
https://apptown.app/api/v1/mcp(Streamable HTTP) - Authentication:
Authorization: Bearer <api key>with a personal API key. Limit the key to one app, or make it read only, to give an AI tool less.
#Tools
| Tool | Does |
|---|---|
list_apps |
the apps you can open |
describe_app |
an app's tables, their fields (API names, types, options) and its API automations |
list_records |
records of a table, with an optional expression filter |
get_record |
one record |
create_record |
add a record |
update_record |
change some fields of a record (send version to avoid overwriting others) |
run_automation |
start an automation that is started by API calls |
Everything works exactly like the REST API: the same permissions, the same validation, and changes are kept in each record's history (marked as made by your API key). Only published apps are visible, never the editor's test data.
#appTown as an MCP client
Automations can call tools on other MCP servers: add the server under
Build → Automations → Connections (its URL and, if needed, a token), then use the step
Call an MCP tool. The tool's arguments are a JSON object (with {{ }} for record
values); its answer can be saved in a field.
